New Romney is a historic market town in the heart of Romney Marsh, surrounded by some of the most distinctive countryside and coastline in Kent. Once an important medieval port, today the town makes an excellent base for exploring the marsh, travelling aboard the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway and discovering the beaches and unusual landscapes of Kent's south-east coast.

History of New Romney
New Romney has a fascinating history shaped by the sea. The town was once one of the original Cinque Ports and an important medieval harbour, despite now sitting more than a mile inland.
Its fortunes changed dramatically following severe storms and changes to the coastline during the Middle Ages. The harbour gradually became unusable and the sea retreated, leaving New Romney surrounded by the flat landscape of Romney Marsh rather than directly on the coast.
Evidence of the town's long history can still be found around New Romney today. St Nicholas Church dates largely from the medieval period and provides one of the clearest reminders of the town's former maritime importance.
New Romney gained another important transport connection in the 20th century with the arrival of the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway. The miniature railway opened in 1927 and remains one of the area's best-known attractions, connecting New Romney with Hythe, Dymchurch and Dungeness.
